NaiLab Startup wants to transform Kenyan Schools

In the spirit of technology meet society, the Nairobi Incubation Lab (Nailab), based in Nairobi is slowly rising among the ranks on technology hotspots in the growing economy of Kenya. This is attributed to the booming of ideas that young Kenyans have to offer, with most of them focusing on mobile applications.

The Nailab, which supports smart and business savvy entrepreneurs turn their ideas into viable businesses plays host to the Tusqee Systems team, a group of young Kenyans that have developed a short message service (SMS) based information sharing portal that makes sure school communications get delivered straight to parents and guardians’ phones.

Tusqee systems which scooped the top prize of Kshs 3 million in investment at the IPO48 event last year got a chance to be interviewed by the BBC news desk, on how their application is transforming the education sector.

The NaiLab is the fourth centre to be set up in Kenya in less than two years after iHub, University of Nairobi’s FabLab and Strathmore’s – iLab as technology firms seek talent to launch new softwares for use in smartphones and computers.

It is worth noting that earlier this year, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop was in Nairobi and expressed interest by the mobile handset manufacturer to establish a regional research and development centre in Nairobi in an effort to capture the growing number Kenya’s software developers to cultivate applications for its African market.

Tusqee Systems have also been featured in a number of local dailies in Kenya, thanks to their information system that integrates the Internet and SMS technology to relay academic information for each student, to the parents.

First NaiLab Incubatees selected

NaiLab aims to support smart and business savvy Kenyan entrepreneurs to turn their ideas into viable businesses. NaiLab focuses on incubating knowledge driven (intelligent) businesses. In short, NaiLab is the incubator, where ICT meets the rest of the economy and society.

Since the launch NaiLab received more than 50 applications for becoming the first incubatees in NaiLab. Last Friday we have selected the first five NaiLab Incubatees. We had a welcoming event where they pitched their startup ideas to each other:

The five first NaiLab Incubatees:

SoluMobi – Startup focused on mobility solutions. These solutions include mobile applications and mobile-based web design. SoluMobi is known for developing Msema Kweli, a mobile application that helps keep track of Community Development Fund projects. It does this by putting the power of keeping track and commenting on the projects via SMS, email and social media platforms in the hands of any person.

Vive Visuals – A startup visual effects company that does high-end motion graphics for film, commercials and a broad range of visualizations. They showcased some impressive first animations and are also preparing an animation for NaiLab of which they showed the promising first sneak preview last Friday.

M-Order – M-order solution is one of the innovations that came out our neighboring IHub space. M-order is a real-time mobile ordering application that provides an efficient and faster way of ordering products of Small and Medium Enterprises. Of course Pete’s Coffee is their first customer so you can order your cappuccino from any spot in the building by using your mobile phone.

Inposting – This new startup is developing a matching service linking interns & early stage job seekers with prospective employers. It will be a talent discovery engine. Inposting looks for best fits in terms of skill sets and employer requirements are established in an efficient, hassle free framework.

TEDx Kibera – TEDx Kibera organizes TEDx events in the slums of Nairobi that take inspiring ideas worth spreading to and from Kibera, Mathare, Korogocho and Kangemi. They were in NaiLab from the moment we opened our doors and are now officially our first housemate.

Besides these five first NaiLab Incubatees some entrepreneurs were selected as NaiLab Seedlings and will be supported to create teams around their ideas and work out their plans. We are still open to new applications so if you have an idea for a business startup please fill in the application form or drop by at NaiLab for a coffee.

Sneak Preview NaiLab Incubation

After months of very hardworking today NaiLab Incubation is opening its doors for a Sneak Preview!

Where Tech meets Society
NaiLab aims to support smart and business savvy Kenyan entrepreneurs to turn their ideas into viable businesses. NaiLab Incubator focuses on incubating knowledge driven (intelligent) businesses. The stereotypical NaiLab incubate consists of a team comprising a business graduate, an industry expert and an ICT expert. The incubates have a growth perspective, a positive vibe and are serving real needs.

In short, NaiLab is the incubator, where ICT meets the rest of the economy and society.

NaiLab is a fertile soil for aspiring entrepreneurs. We provide the physical and knowledge space where business minded teams grow intelligent companies. You create, co-create, learn, experiment and grow. We support your freedom to do what you are destined to do.

Cheetah Generation
The idea for NaiLab was born in Nairobi already a few years ago. We met a lot of young Kenyan people with new refreshing ideas to start a project or business. Too often, young Kenyan entrepreneurs, web developers, creatives, researchers and innovative thinkers (often referred to as the “Cheetah generation”) labour in isolation and with limited resources, working on the same or similar problems that someone, somewhere else has likely already solved.

They often have good ideas but lack professional business skills and have limited access to networks, businesses and investors to upscale their ideas. The idea behind NaiLab is to provide a space for exceptionally smart “doers” under one roof, provide them with a high quality work environment, generate ideas at a rapid pace, train and coach them and implement those that are of greatest potential impact.

Stimulate entrepreneurship
NaiLab aims to stimulate entrepreneurship through:
- providing a professional physical inspiring work environment.
- providing a professional training and coaching programme.
- providing access to role-models and professional networks
- providing a crowdsouring / crowdfunding platform
- fostering co-creation, co-operation and lateral thinking.

What does NaiLab have to offer?
- a 1,972 sq ft space on the top floor of a building in the centre of Nairobi
- a working space for on average 30-35 people:
- organic flexible working spaces that make it possible to work alone or in a team
- a meeting / workshop / brainstorm space
- a network of professionals, coaches and investors
- and – we hope very fast – internet / wifi

NaiLab is neigbouring *iHub, Nairobi’s tech innovation co-working space who started the ICT innovation wave in Nairobi, and is in the same building as the soon to be opened Mlab, the incubation centre for mobile apps. NaiLab is co-founder of AfriLabs.com, the network of African tech incubators and open collaboration spaces.
