Sneak Preview NaiLab Incubation

After months of very hardworking today NaiLab Incubation is opening its doors for a Sneak Preview!

Where Tech meets Society
NaiLab aims to support smart and business savvy Kenyan entrepreneurs to turn their ideas into viable businesses. NaiLab Incubator focuses on incubating knowledge driven (intelligent) businesses. The stereotypical NaiLab incubate consists of a team comprising a business graduate, an industry expert and an ICT expert. The incubates have a growth perspective, a positive vibe and are serving real needs.

In short, NaiLab is the incubator, where ICT meets the rest of the economy and society.

NaiLab is a fertile soil for aspiring entrepreneurs. We provide the physical and knowledge space where business minded teams grow intelligent companies. You create, co-create, learn, experiment and grow. We support your freedom to do what you are destined to do.

Cheetah Generation
The idea for NaiLab was born in Nairobi already a few years ago. We met a lot of young Kenyan people with new refreshing ideas to start a project or business. Too often, young Kenyan entrepreneurs, web developers, creatives, researchers and innovative thinkers (often referred to as the “Cheetah generation”) labour in isolation and with limited resources, working on the same or similar problems that someone, somewhere else has likely already solved.

They often have good ideas but lack professional business skills and have limited access to networks, businesses and investors to upscale their ideas. The idea behind NaiLab is to provide a space for exceptionally smart “doers” under one roof, provide them with a high quality work environment, generate ideas at a rapid pace, train and coach them and implement those that are of greatest potential impact.

Stimulate entrepreneurship
NaiLab aims to stimulate entrepreneurship through:
- providing a professional physical inspiring work environment.
- providing a professional training and coaching programme.
- providing access to role-models and professional networks
- providing a crowdsouring / crowdfunding platform
- fostering co-creation, co-operation and lateral thinking.

What does NaiLab have to offer?
- a 1,972 sq ft space on the top floor of a building in the centre of Nairobi
- a working space for on average 30-35 people:
- organic flexible working spaces that make it possible to work alone or in a team
- a meeting / workshop / brainstorm space
- a network of professionals, coaches and investors
- and – we hope very fast – internet / wifi

NaiLab is neigbouring *iHub, Nairobi’s tech innovation co-working space who started the ICT innovation wave in Nairobi, and is in the same building as the soon to be opened Mlab, the incubation centre for mobile apps. NaiLab is co-founder of AfriLabs.com, the network of African tech incubators and open collaboration spaces.

What is the role of 1%CLUB
As co-founder 1%CLUB we invest our knowledge, network and money in NaiLab for the first start up years.

Why? Because we love good ideas. Wherever they come from. We love to realize the potential in people across the world, and we are passionate advocates of the power and possibilities the internet offers. NaiLab offers an inspiring professional working space for people in Nairobi with Smart Ideas and through 1%CLUB we will connect them with People, Money and Knowledge around the world.

As 1%CLUB we would like to outsource a part of our web development and marketing activities to NaiLab and hope to work together with the best venture coming out of NaiLab Incubation. Of course it also a great spot to organize our 1%EVENT and Co-Creation workshops.

12 and 13 May: Open Data for Development Camp

Looking for innovative ways to involve and collaborate with people worldwide?

The Open Data for Development Camp (12 and 13 May 2011) brings together a diverse crowd of development aid workers, policy-makers, researchers, journalists, IT staff, software developers and service providers.

Come and explore the potential of open data and its implications for international cooperation, on May 12th and 13th:

  • A round-table for decision-makers:  introducing key concepts, threats and opportunities, discussing conditions and policies to introduce open data in an organisation, and particularly how does open data contribute to more effective international cooperation?
  • Clinics and workshops for practitioners: clarifying the basics of open data, presenting best practices and lessons learned, identifying how open data increases transparency and improves international collaboration, and learning about data-driven journalism and communication.
  • Hack days and code sprints for developers: dealing with repositories and registries, supporting standards and APIs, publishing and reusing data sets, linking open data, and developing tools, apps and mash-ups.

You can sign up at the Open Data for Development Camp website.

Don’t forget to download and spread the flyer Open Data for Development Camp (PDF)

OPEN FOR CHANGE

Open for Change; the Dutch Network for Transparency, Collaboration and Impact in Development. Open for Change is hosted by Partos, the Dutch association of private international aid organisations.

The start of Open for Change is a joint effort of numerous Dutch organisations. Our shared observation is the wide-spread interest in global development sector for Internet and in particular open access. But we also observe a constant challenge to match skills, methods, knowledge and technology to this ambition to maximize the benefits of Internet en successfully implement the principles of open access within the sector and its specific stakeholders.

Open for Change is both our playground for innovation as well as a source of knowledge and experiences. Our aim is to increase access to data, knowledge and software applications within the global development sector and especially within the Dutch network of collaborating organizations.

Creative 1%Co-Creation

For quite some time the 1%CLUB organizes 1%Co-creations that connects 1%Projectowners, creative people, and companies. During one day they all work together on one case with the intention that a concrete plan is created at the end of the day.

Because the concept works so well, we thought it was time to use this concept for our own campaign! Last Wednesday, the 27th of April 2011, we organized a 1%Co-creation with inventive minds of different well-known Dutch creative agencies at Accenture. As a partner of the 1%CLUB, Accenture supports the 1%CLUB with their knowledge, experience, and network.

The goal of the 1%Co-creation was clear: come up with challenging and innovative ideas for a nationwide campaign for the 1%CLUB! The present creative agencies were divided in three groups and after a brief introduction of Anna and Bart about the 1%CLUB the brainstorm could begin!

The inspiring rooms and the positive vibe created an interesting and successful 1%Co-creation. A lot of good ideas were born and presented that evening in the Accenture building in Amsterdam. We will keep you posted on further developments about our campaign!
