TED Talk: Cheetahs vs. Hippos

17 minutes and 52 seconds. That’s all it takes to watch this video. Trust me: do it!

Economist George Ayittey sees Africa’s future as a fight between Hippos — complacent, greedy bureaucrats wallowing in the muck — and Cheetahs, the fast-moving, entrepreneurial leaders and citizens who will rebuild Africa.

Should we really find an explanation for everything?

After watching the previous video I start thinking.  No doubt about that I love new opportunities and challenges we’re facing because of the internet. On the other hand, some things don’t have to be explained. In fact, please don’t find a explaination for everything. Theo Maassen (English Wikipedia page), knows how to say what my thoughts are… (sorry guys, the video is in Dutch)

The internet of things

This Monday half of of the 1%CREW will attend MOMO nr.15 here in Amsterdam it will be all about the internet of things. It’s a trending topic right now and together with the open data movement it’s going to change the world!

IBM just made a great video about it illustrates that point. Have a look and feel why I’m getting so excited and using big words.

This is the main reason I’m into this internet stuff. It’s mindblowing and the only limitation will be /is our imagination.

2012: The Sequel Begins

December 2012 new elections will take place in Kenya. The elections in 2007 started a period of political, economic, and humanitarian crisis in Kenya.

The 2007–2008 Kenyan crisis refers to a political, economic, and humanitarian crisis that erupted in Kenya after incumbent President Mwai Kibaki was declared the winner of the presidential election held on December 27, 2007. Supporters of Kibaki’s opponent, Raila Odinga of the Orange Democratic Movement, alleged electoral manipulation. This was widely confirmed by international observers[7], perpetrated by both parties in the election.

Ushahidi (“testimony” in Swahili) initially was developed to map reports of violence in Kenya. The website was used to map incidents of violence and peace efforts throughout the country based on reports submitted via the web and mobile phone. Since then Ushahidi has been used in several areas to map situations that needed an overview. Like the recent earthquake in Chile, the tragedy on Haiti earlier this year and even in Washington during ‘Snowmageddon’.

Check the video below, an impressive overview by pictures.
