1%CLUB Web Strategy 3.0

Our 1%CLUB website is now 3 years online. The current version is 2.0. So time to brainstorm about the next version. But what should the 1%CLUB Website version 3.0 look like?

Because we do not have all the answers we decided to tap in to the wisdom of experts and invited some of the following web guru’s and offered them a free pizza and a beer (who can refuse that?) in exchange for their ideas.

• Mathijs van Abbe (@mathys) – Mister Mobypicture
• Daan van Tongeren (@daanvt) – Founder of the Social Intranet tool WorkVoices
• Rolf Kleef (@rolfkleef) – Mister Open for Change himself
• Erik Visser (@erikvisser) – Online Conversation Expert and great goalie
• Erwin Blom (@erwblo) –  New Media Innovator (website) and founder The Crowds
• Bill Zimmerman (@billzimmerman) – Founder ActiveSpaces in Cameroon and founder of VC4Africa.bizz
• Mike Lee (@bmf) – Developer of Obama app and now running for mayor of Appsterdam

BITS OF RAIN, PIZZA AND FREEDOM

Although the rain was crazy still a lot of people showed up for the brainstorm at the new office of Bits of Freedom. Bits of Freedom is the Dutch digital rights organization, focusing on privacy and communications freedom in the digital age.

Bits of Freedom stands up for your freedom and privacy on the internet. As 1%CLUB we appreciate their work (and office) a lot! Thank you guys for your hospitality!

THE BRAINSTORM OUTCOMES

Here the most important brainstorm outcomes in random order:

• Focus on personalised matchmaking between projects and members

• Create a mashup (bringing existing tools together)

• Add Open Data portability (to and from)

• Create cloud of experts and create a microtasking app

• Add Gamification and reward elements to the platform

• Create a web of trust around the projects

• Take mobile as a starting point

• Create a pyramid of engagement for the community

STARTING WITH A BLANK PAGE

Erik Visser had a brainwave and sent us the following advise in the middle of the night:

Okay starting with a blank page all over again. Thanks Erik!

Let us now tap in to the wisdom of the 1%Crowd. What do you think version 3.0 of the 1%CLUB should look like?

A magical solution [guestblog]

When taking a course called ‘Anthropology and Sociology of Development’, I wondered to what extend 1%CLUB was a magic bullet. A magic bullet can be defined in many ways. For the essay I wrote, I used the following explanation:

A magic bullet defines itself as the belief to be able to solve world poverty through a simple receipt. It is a magical and fast idea that should have huge effects. The ideology of a magic bullet involves much enthusiasm and a firm belief in the solution.

By analyzing 1%CLUB, I hoped to figure out whether 1%CLUB’s way of working (International Co-operation 2.0) could be defined as a magic bullet. More on International Co-operation can be found here.

Meeting in Diangoudja, Mali

As an example of a potential magic bullet, I used the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). It seems like such a fantastic and simple idea: combining every country in the UN to fight poverty. But it is often overlooked how many actions are necessary to achieve something. Yes, you can donate money, and yes, they probably can use it well in Third World countries, but how do you know what the poor people want and need? You can build a hospital in a poor area but can the sick people afford the medication or even get to the hospital?

1%CLUB seems to avoid such things by making each 1%PROJECT as specific as it could possibly be. They do urge everyone to join in and ‘make it work’, but wouldn’t everyone do that? Of course there is a firm belief in the solution. Why else would you start?

And why couldn’t the solution to poverty be easy? The thing that really matters is that someone benefits. The woman who is able to buy a new sewing machine can make clothes for her family and sell what’s left, her world changes. That one woman counts.

Virtual Kenya [guestblog]

Three weeks ago, Virtual Kenya launched by Upande Ltd and partners, WRI, Wildlife Clubs of Kenya, Jacaranda Designs Ltd., and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI).

Virtual Kenya offers a guide on how to improve this paucity of high quality and reliable spatial data. The innovation will enable Kenyans to use and interact with spatial data in their educational and professional pursuits, which will undoubtedly improve the relevance of their education and work for improved livelihoods, society and nation building.

The newly launched platform will provide online access to publicly available spatial data sets, as well as, interactive tools and learning resources to utilize the vast array of data. This unprecedented opportunity to download, publish, share and comment on a myriad of map-based products will promote data sharing and spatial analysis.

Upande Ltd, the technical lead on the collaborative Virtual Kenya project, provided the following list (and notes) of interactive tools that will be utilized:
•    Virtual Kenya Tours using Google Earth with 2D and 3D maps, images, and graphs to explain data from the Atlas with voice overs in an interactive and entertaining format.
•    Interactive Map Viewer that allows users to view, create, and download maps of Kenya
•    Social networking community to share GIS and mapping experiences among Virtual Kenya users;
•    Baseline data on Kenya’s environment and geography in multiple file formats that are freely available and comprehensive;
•    Learning resources, including a teachers guide and student activity booklets, to help educators use maps and information from the Atlas in their classrooms even without access to the Internet or computers;
•    Tutorials to help users take advantage of all that Virtual Kenya has to offer
This mix of tools shows that even those with limited/no with  GIS technology will find Virtual Kenya user-friendly.  The visual nature of the innovation will also limit the constraints posed by issues of illiteracy, functional and otherwise.

Building the Virtual Kenya community
Following the launch of the Virtual Kenya website, an extensive national outreach program will be implemented by Upande Ltd., the Nairobi-based firm behind the website, along with the Wildlife Clubs of Kenya (WCK), Jacaranda Designs Ltd., and ILRI, who together have developed offline educational materials to complement the website.

Recap
Virtual Kenya is an amazing informational resource, offering materials in wide variety of formats including DVD for those with no internet access. The amount of data on the site is very impressive. Along with a variety of tutorials and their blog, they feature over 100 informational maps to give you easy access to their data.

Beyond that, they showcase a variety of Vitual Kenya Tours using Google Earth on different topics. A good example of that is the Wildlife Tour and Tourism Tour, which shows off the country using quite a few different KML overlays and 3D models.

In all, it’s quite an amazing site! If you have data to contribute, they have a section of the site full of information on how best to submit it to them. To try it all for yourself, simply head over to the Virtual Kenya site and dig in.

Happy Birthday Nelson Mandela!

A man that made a true difference in the world: Nelson Mandela. Today, he celebrates his 93′s birthday. This morning millions of South-African schoolchildren sang him a special version of Happy Birthday.

Mandela is internationally respected for his battle against the apartheid. He was also the first black president of South-Africa.

Since two years, the 18th of July is the official International Day of Nelson Mandela. The day puts special focus on voluntary work. People around the world will volunteer for 67 minutes. The number 67 stands for the years that Mandela was active for the common good.

Nelson Mandela himself will not attend the festivities organized for him. He celebrates his birthday with his family in his hometown Qunu. In 2004 Mandela retreated from public life.

No idea what you want to give Nelson Mandela for his birthday? Check out our projects in South-Africa!

Pure Coffee… July 14th in Maastricht

For once a blog for about 99% in Dutch. This because I want to quote some parts from the ‘Zuivere Koffie‘ website. This is an initiative of the creative minds in beautiful Limburg.

On July 14th I’ll be opening ‘Zuivere Koffie’ in Maastricht with a short (10 minutes) and powerful (yes!) presentation about 1%CLUB.

Drop by if you’re around!

60 minutes of zuivere koffie is
